Power should answer to the people who live here
Right now, decisions about our electric bills, infrastructure and energy future are made by an investor-owned utility.
This amendment would require St. Petersburg to create a City-owned electric utility, giving our community more control over:
Affordable electric service
Reliable & resilient infrastructure
Cleaner energy & local planning
Public oversight & accountability
What the amendment would do:
Require the City to establish a publicly owned electric utility
Direct the City to negotiate for the electric system assets needed to serve St. Pete
Require legal acquisition proceedings if an agreement is not reached within one year
Create a five-member governing board, including three members elected directly by residents
What the petition would do:
It places the question before St. Pete voters so our community can make the final decision.
This petition does not immediately create the utility
WHO CAN SIGN:
Only registered voters who live within the City of St. Petersburg may sign a petition.
Here is the language voters would see on the ballot:
Creation of City-Owned Electric Utility
Requires City to create an electric utility and acquire needed assets of existing utility, by negotiation or eminent domain if no agreement within one year; creates board governing rates and service with three resident-elected members and two Council-appointed members serving staggered four-year terms; provides for appointment of a utility director; allows residents to seek judicial enforcement; states intention that City have more control over affordability, sustainability, resilience, environmental impacts, planning, and accountability.
